Major Scales for Guitar
A look at how Major Scales are constructed and how they relate to the neck of a guitar
Although guitar players may well learn other scales such as the pentatonic minor or blues scale first the Major scale is the most important one for any guitarist to understand
This is because the Major scale is the key to developing an understanding of music theory for the guitar as all other scales tend to be defined with regard to their relationship with the Major scale
If they understand the Major Scale properly they will better understand all other scales, chords and harmonic systems (keys)
In order to understand Major scales (or any scale) a guitarist must understand the intervals of a "whole-step" (2 frets) and a "half-step" (1 fret)
Whole-step and half-step intervals
How to construct any major scale on a guitar
The "rules" of Major scale construction
Rule 1:
Each letter of the alphabet occurs only once in any Major scale with the exception of the root note (the note from which it derives its name) which appears as both the first and last note of the scale
Rule 2:
Aside from the scale of C Major (which has none) each Major Scale has its own unique number of either #s or bs (never a mixture of #s and bs)
