Guitar Curriculum: The Role of Music Theory
During the beginner and early intermediate stages of learning to play the guitar music theory should take a back seat whilst efforts are concentrated on developing the basic physical skills that will allow a student to function effectively on the instrument even if they do not (yet) really know what they are doing from a theoretical standpoint
I feel the need to stress at the very beginning that this is not because music theory is of less importance to guitar players than the development of technique and repertoire We have a section devoted to the question of when should a guitar player begin a study of music theory and you may like to take a sniff around there for some more "in depth" material on the subject if thats what floats your boat but stay on this page for more material about helping students to build technique and develop repertoire So, having safely "parked" music theory until slightly later in a guitar player's development when they have learned to press some pre tensioned wires down onto a bit of wood with one hand while sounding those wires with the other hand then we can look at the other two elements of guitar playing
Luckily those elements (technique and repertoire) can be developed at more or less the same time
Following on from a series of very early lessons where learners are better not really concerning themselves with songs but concentrating their efforts on the physical basics of sounding and playing the best eight chords for a beginner to learn in time to music then songs (or more likely fragments of songs such as hooks or choruses) can be introduced to complement the tastes and aspirations of the student (not the teacher!)
The basic physical capabilities (pressing strings down and sounding them) should be developed during the early weeks and months of learning guitar with students learning to move between the best eight beginners chords in time to music and then to use that capability to play combinations of those chords in time to music Teaching children to play the guitar is a whole different ball game! It's not so much about anything other than having fun now! and if developing young guitar players is your thing you may like to look at our children's guitar curriculum' to find out more Acoustic and electric guitars are different and it is reasonable and obvious to make broad distinctions between not only the instruments but also between the types of student (our customers) who seek instruction in one or the other Below you will see links to both our acoustic and electric guitar curriculum pages with a (light hearted at times) examination of the difference between an effectice curriculum for the acoustic and electric guitar player I realise, accept and welcome that there is no such thing as a "typical guitar student" and am eager to point out that I am using stereotypes as a tool to enable me to dig a little deeper with regard to the make up and motivations of our basic types of customer Folks who wish to learn acoustic guitar want to accompany themselves (or somebody else who is) singing a song To find out more about building an effective acoustic-guitar-curriculum click the blue text The people who set out to be electric guitar players want to be fret melting Rock Gods! A generalisation I know but we investigate issues surrounding the use of an effective electric guitar curriculum here

Rather than divide the materials into a series of teaching packs and sell them separately (as I have been advised to do on numerous occasions by people who know much more about this online marketing malarkey than I do) I would much rather just bundle all of the guitar teaching aids together in a single bumper download and have folks feel like they got a bargain rather than decide between options and run the risk of choosing the wrong one

Alongside the resources aimed at beginners and children there is also a whole load of materials that can be used when teaching intermediate and more advanced guitar players
There are a whole load of resources designed for teaching music theory to guitar players and even stuff aimed at helping a teacher to understand how songwriting works on guitar
Add the material on teaching ukulele alongside the bass guitar teaching resources in addition to stuff geared towards teaching jazz guitar basics and you can see why I feel justified in claiming that the teachwombat download offers rediculously good value for money
Only the most advanced and versatile guitar teachers will use all of the materials but I think it is fair to claim that anyone who teaches guitar will find that the download makes their teaching better and the process easier
