How much should you charge for teaching guitar lessons?
The following is an analysis of the factors that may be at play when deciding how much you should set out to charge for your guitar lessons
If you teach guitar in schools and colleges the likelihood is that your "per lesson" pricing policy is most probably outside of your direct control as organisations are likely to have their own policies with regard to payment levels etc and your only choice may be to "take it or leave it" so what follows is an investigation of the factors that may influence your "private practice" as a guitar teacher
Factors influencing your pricing policy as a guitar teacher
There are a wide range of factors that can influence the amount that you decide to charge for your guitar lessons
They include..........
1: Your current skill level and experience
2: Your local reputation
3: The competition and conditions within your area
4: How easy it is for your customers to use your service?
The four P's of Marketing
During this article I will refer to the decades old (but still widely used because it is still relevant) "four p's of marketing" They are "Product" "Price" "Placement" and "Promotion"
1: Product
Is there an existing (or can there be created?) market for the guitar lessons that you have to offer?
2: Price
How much could you realistically charge for teaching the guitar around where you live?
3: Placement
How easy is it for customers to take guitar lessons from you?
4: Promotion
Can you economically contact enough of your prospective guitar students of your service to generate a worthwhile profit?
The next part of the article will look at each of the "four P's in greater detail exploring some of the variables often associated with each one
Product
Is there an existing (or can there be created?) market for the guitar lessons that you have to offer?
The four P's of marketing are a tool and to use the tool correctly you need to be honest with yourself and ask questions like....
Do folks around here take guitar lessons?
Are there local guitar teachers who seem to be earning a living?
Are your guitar lessons as "good" as those offered by your existing competitors?
Will you specialise in a particular part of the market such as teaching children or teaching beginners guitar You may even consider specialising in a particular genre like jazz guitar instruction if that's what floats your boat?
Price
How much could you realistically charge for teaching the guitar around where you live?
How much do my direct competitors charge their students?
Could I make a living if I charged the same?
Am I in a position to charge more (or less) than the competition?
Placement
How easy is it for customers to take guitar lessons from you?
Is the place where you wish to teach well served by public transport?
Will you offer mobile lessons where you travel to the student?
How well placed are your competitors with regard to the above?
Promotion
Can you economically inform enough of your prospective guitar students of your service to generate a worthwhile profit?
Do you have a local "reputation" as a guitar player that you can incorporate into advertising/promotional material?
How does your local cometition get students?
Should you pay for advertisments on social media etc?
Are there local music stores/ rehearsal rooms that have notice boards etc?
Should you have a website?
Make sure that your guitar teaching product is high quality
